The incumbent Republican, 'Sideshow' Bob Marshall, is an extreme religious crusader who uses his office to promote his anti-reproductive rights and anti-gay rights agenda. He doesn’t represent the majority.

Post's View: For Virginia’s House of Delegates

District 13. It’s conceivable there are more extreme and incendiary lawmakers in Richmond than Del. Robert G. “Bob” Marshall, but if so, it’s a brief list. Mr. Marshall, a Republican widely known as “Sideshow Bob,” spews contempt for the disabled, for gay men and lesbians, for women who have abortions and for anyone else who does not match his cramped ideal of a perfect society. Even fellow Republicans roll their eyes at Mr. Marshall’s off-the-wall philosophizing. He has suggested that God’s vengeance explains disabled children born to women who previously had abortions; tried to ban gays from serving in Virginia’s National Guard; proposed that the state establish its own currency lest the Federal Reserve collapse; and led an assault on climate-change science by attacking academic freedom at the University of Virginia. He accepted campaign contributions exceeding the legal limit when he ran for Congress last year, then ignored federal regulators who warned his campaign about the violation.

Short Summaries

Opioid overdose deaths exceed fatal car accidents as the leading cause of unnatural death in Virginia. Governor McAuliffe has declared the opioid addiction crisis a public health emergency in Virginia; in early 2017, he worked with Democrats and Republicans alike to pass a bill to reduce the damage of the epidemic by helping people find treatment, get tested for HIV, etc. Your delegate, Bob Marshall, voted against the bill. Your delegate, Bob Marshall, as a member of the Republican majority in the House of Delegates, prevented the expansion of Medicaid, denying 400,000 eligible Virginians access to Substance Abuse Services.

Women’s Health Rights

The availability of low- and no-cost health services for women has been protected once again in Virginia when Governor McAuliffe vetoed legislation on Feb 21, 2017. The bill would have removed all state funding for medical services (which currently do not include funding abortions) to Planned Parenthood clinics. The bill was sponsored by Del. Benjamin L. Cline (R24-Rockbridge) and was passed in the state House and Senate with all Republicans supporting it, including your delegate, Bob Marshall (R13).  Had the bill passed into law, women in Virginia would no longer have access to well-women services such as screening for sexually transmitted diseases and family planning at Planned Parenthood clinics. In Richmond alone, Planned Parenthood served over 13,000 patients in 2013 for precancerous screenings, annual exams, and prescription birth control. Planned Parenthood is one of the few medical clinics addressing health disparity in our communities where the poor have few other affordable healthcare choices. The Republicans’ war on women continues unabated. Constant vigilance is necessary to protect women’s access to vital healthcare services and to protect women’s freedom to make personal decisions about their health.
